Bread Price Hike: Kano PCACC Summons Flour Dealers, Bakers for Questioning

In response to the rising cost of bread, the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has summoned key stakeholders, including flour dealers from Singer Market and the chairman of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN). This move is aimed at addressing the growing public concern over the widening gap between the prices of bread and flour.

In a letter signed by PCACC Chairman Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, the commission emphasized the need to investigate the disparity. “The invitation will allow my Committee to question the millers about the continued gap between the rising price of bread and the flour price, which remains at N9,000 per 50kg at the farm gates,” the letter stated.

The PCACC’s decision to summon these parties is backed by Sections 9 and 15 of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission Law 2008 (As Amended), which mandate the investigation of such economic discrepancies. The commission believes that a thorough inquiry is necessary to identify the root causes of the price increase and to find a viable solution.

Moreover, the letter underscores that resolving this issue requires addressing the concerns of both the flour dealers and the bakers’ association. By utilizing Section 31 of its enabling law, the PCACC has formally invited these stakeholders for a detailed discussion. The commission aims to bridge the gap between the production costs and the final retail prices of bread, thereby ensuring fair pricing for consumers in Kano State.
