Bread, Food Price Hike: Kano Agency Steps in to Restore Order

The Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has raised concerns over the recent surge in bread and food prices, attributing it to alleged artificial inflation by traders.

In a statement made on Thursday at the commission’s headquarters, Chairman Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado emphasized that the PCACC will not tolerate the exploitation of consumers. Gado highlighted the growing public discontent regarding the current bread prices, which remain high despite a reported stabilization in the price of flour.

Gado revealed that over the past week, the commission received numerous complaints from the public about a reduction in the price of flour, a critical raw material used in bread production. He said, “The people want the commission to find out why those selling bread refused to reduce the price of bread.”

The PCACC responded by engaging with local bakers to understand the issue. According to Gado, the bakers claimed they had reduced the price of bread but faced new challenges. “They complained that within two days, the flour dealers increased the price by ₦5,000 per bag. Flour, which was previously sold for around ₦60,000, is now being sold for about ₦65,000,” Gado explained.

The PCACC is investigating these claims to ensure fair pricing practices and to prevent traders from artificially inflating prices at the expense of consumers. The commission is committed to addressing these concerns and ensuring that food prices reflect actual market conditions rather than manipulative practices.
