A Northern group, the Coalition for Emancipation of Sokoto Youths, has announced its intention to join the upcoming nationwide protest against bad governance. The group is urging Governor Ahmad Sokoto of Sokoto State to support the movement.
In a statement by Abubakar Babangida, the group expressed their grievances over the denial of fundamental human rights to youths, particularly their freedom of expression. Babangida criticized the state government for failing to protect its citizens and instead contributing to their oppression. The group plans to participate in the protests to demand an end to bad governance.
The statement reads: “We were shocked and dismayed to witness cracks in an institution responsible for the well-being, unity, progress, and development of its citizens—the government of our dear Sokoto State.
“We were ashamed to see a select group of individuals rallying to defend those who have bankrupted them.
“We are disappointed that in our own state, youths have been silenced and marginalized to the extent that they cannot express their views on the current ineffective and unfocused government of Sokoto State.
“At this juncture, let us thank Almighty Allah for sparing our lives. We remain committed to advocating for good leadership and governance, not only in our state but across the country.
“The position on the planned nationwide peaceful protest, as stated by His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, the Governor of our state, on Friday, July 26th, is his personal stance and not representative of the general public, especially the concerned youths of Sokoto State who seek a brighter future for our state.
“We categorically condemn their selfish position and distance ourselves from it. Those few supporters are sponsored and cannot represent the interests of the good people of Sokoto State, especially the youth.
“Why have they not specified the number of programs they initiated and implemented to benefit our youths, apart from enriching their family and friends with public wealth?
“Why have they not addressed the issues of insecurity and poverty despite receiving substantial funds from the federal government every month?
“Governor, let me remind you that during your election campaign, you promised to use the last kobo in state government coffers to end banditry and insecurity in our state. Have you forgotten your promises, Your Excellency?
“You also pledged to lift youths out of poverty, unemployment, and idleness, and to appoint youths to represent them in your government. Are your family and friends the only youths in the state, Your Excellency?
“Our position is crystal clear. We urge you to join us in the planned national peaceful protest to #EndBadGovernment.”
