Hunger Protests: Losing Abuja Means Losing Nigeria – Wike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, praised protesters in Abuja for maintaining a non-violent and peaceful stance, emphasizing that if the capital city were to succumb to violence, it would signal the loss of the entire nation.

Wike made this remark during the presentation of the Staff of Office to four newly graded Chiefs in Abuja.

According to reports by *The PUNCH*, the scheduled #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests began in Abuja earlier today, with demonstrators gathering at the MKO Abiola Stadium as early as 6 a.m., following a court order that restricted the protest to this location.

Despite the largely peaceful nature of the protests, there were isolated incidents of violence, prompting security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, to deploy tear gas in an attempt to restore order.

In response to the protests, several businesses, banks, and markets across the city shut down out of concern that the situation could escalate into a larger crisis.

During his address, Wike highlighted the importance of dialogue between protesters and the government, urging citizens to be patient with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“I commend the protesters in Abuja who have remained peaceful. Abuja is the Centre of Unity; it belongs to everyone. If we lose Abuja, we lose Nigeria. That’s why we must work together. Under the present administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, there is nothing we cannot achieve. Give him time, and many things will change,” Wike stated.

He further emphasized the importance of dialogue, encouraging protesters to continue their peaceful approach while reiterating the government’s willingness to engage in discussions.

“We have seen many times that dialogue is the better path; sitting down to discuss with the government is more productive. I urge you to continue this peace process, for those who seek peace will ultimately reap its rewards. I commend you and once again appeal to our people that we are ready to sit with them, to dialogue, and to resolve any outstanding issues,” Wike added.
