Protesters Confront Police in Port-Harcourt, Decry Hunger, Hardship

Protesters in Port Harcourt have escalated their actions, storming the Federal Secretariat along the Aba Expressway to express their dissatisfaction with the government.

The unrest began yesterday when a significant number of youths gathered at the Government House in Port Harcourt, seeking answers from Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara regarding the ongoing protests.

Tensions flared after the governor addressed the crowd at precisely 12:01 PM, offering a small monetary gesture to appease their demands. Governor Fubara acknowledged the hardships faced by Nigerians, stating, “You are here because you want a better Nigeria. I am one of you. I see your pains. I will convey your message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

However, the governor’s offer of financial aid sparked outrage among some protesters, who felt insulted by what they perceived as an inadequate response to their grievances. “How much can you give us? We want good governance, not money. Keep your money,” some protesters chanted in defiance.

Today, August 2, the protests intensified as demonstrators, rallying under the #EndBadGovernance banner, marched to the Federal Secretariat on the Aba Expressway, where they confronted police officers stationed to maintain order. The protesters were heard chanting, “Hungry dey, hungry dey, hungry dey,” as they approached the police, voicing their deep frustration with the government.
