The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has attributed the ongoing nationwide hardship to the policies implemented by the Federal Government. In a statement released on Sunday, Obaseki expressed concern over the difficult living conditions faced by Nigerians, which he believes are a direct result of federal policies over the past year.
Governor Obaseki emphasized that his administration has introduced several people-oriented programs to mitigate the impact of these challenges on Edo residents. Among the initiatives are an increase in the minimum wage to N70,000 to enhance workers’ purchasing power, the launch of a free transportation scheme along routes serviced by the Edo City Transport Service, and the expansion of free Wi-Fi access in public spaces to facilitate telecommuting. Additionally, a state-wide feeding program targeting vulnerable populations has been implemented in collaboration with Christian and Muslim organizations.
“The protest is clearly a reaction to the difficult living conditions that Nigerians have had to endure, particularly in the last year, as a result of various Federal Government policies,” Obaseki said. “These policies have severely affected citizens, leading to skyrocketing food prices, increased transportation costs, rampant inflation, and the loss of operating capital for small business owners across the country.”
He further stated, “In Edo State, we have taken several measures within our constitutional authority to alleviate the suffering and hardship of our people. We are committed to showing empathy and supporting our citizens as they navigate these trying times, despite the challenges being felt nationwide.”
