Hold Governors Accountable Too, Not Just FG — Doguwa tells Protesters

Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the lawmaker representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency in Kano State, has urged protesters to also hold their state governors accountable, not just the Federal Government, for issues affecting the nation.

In a statement made in Kano while addressing officials of the Kano Youth Forum, Doguwa emphasized the importance of governors in safeguarding lives and properties and ensuring the effective use of public funds.

“This is why governors are referred to as the chief security officers of their respective states,” Doguwa said. “They must be held accountable for protecting the lives and properties of their people. It is a collective responsibility, and it is not right to continue blaming the federal government alone. While I do not absolve the federal government of its responsibilities, I agree that our people are facing significant challenges, and the government must be held responsible. However, people must understand that the solutions to our problems do not rest solely on the shoulders of the federal government.”

Doguwa, a former Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly and current leader of the Northern Regional Caucus in the 10th Assembly, pointed out that the current economic challenges are not unique to Nigeria.

“I acknowledge that there are issues—economic, social, and others—that we must address,” Doguwa said. “However, I want to stress that these problems are not the responsibility of the Federal Government alone. Governors, local government councils, and other government agencies, which are fully funded to carry out their constitutional duties, are also involved.”

He also called on youths to engage in constructive dialogue with the government to find solutions to the country’s challenges, cautioning against destructive protests.

“This is the democratic approach I advocate for, as opposed to taking to the streets with sticks and other dangerous weapons, destroying public offices, vandalizing, and looting shops in the name of protest,” he stated. “Such actions are not in your best interest, nor do they serve the society well, and the government will not tolerate such behavior.”

Doguwa’s remarks come as Nigerians, particularly youths, engage in a ten-day nationwide protest to express their grievances over the current hardship and hunger, primarily targeting the federal government for accountability.
