Police in Borno State have confirmed the arrest of nine protesters in Maiduguri for allegedly displaying Russian flags during demonstrations.
Borno State Police Commissioner Yusuf Lawal announced the arrests on Tuesday while providing a situation report. He said the individuals were detained in connection with protests that occurred on Monday in the Zannari Tamsu area of Gwange Ward.
The suspects from Zannari Tamsu have been identified as Khalafi Abdulhamid, Mohammed Abubakar, Mohamed Ibrahim, and Abba Hassan.
“In addition, five more protesters were apprehended in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri, also for carrying Russian flags,” Mr. Lawal stated. The detainees from Bulumkutu include Bashir Ahmad, Musa Lawan, Abba Mallam, Habibu Auwal, and Inusa Abdullahi.
The police commissioner added that the suspects have been transferred to the Crack Squad for a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution.
Mr. Lawal emphasized that the situation in Maiduguri remains calm and assured the public that police patrols would continue in the area to maintain safety and order.
