NLC Issues 7 Fresh Demands to FG in #EndBadGovernance Protests

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has presented a series of demands to the federal government amidst the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests. These demands were outlined in a communique signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday.

Reversal of Harmful Policies

The NLC called for an immediate reversal of government policies it deems detrimental to Nigerians, urging the administration to implement measures that prioritize the welfare of the people, create jobs, and ensure a fair distribution of resources.

Condemnation of Violence Against Protesters

The union condemned the killing of protesters by security forces and declared a day of mourning to honor those who were injured or killed during the protests. The NLC also criticized security agencies for resorting to violence against peaceful demonstrators while neglecting other pressing security challenges in the country.

The NEC stated, “The right to protest is a fundamental democratic right, and its suppression through violence is unacceptable. The attempt to criminalize protest is deplorable, especially in a democracy. The hiring and use of sponsored thugs and divisive propaganda to disrupt the protests is most unfortunate.”

Demand for Accountability

The NLC is calling for an independent investigation into the killings and injuries inflicted on protesters, with a demand for those responsible to be held accountable. The union also demanded the immediate release of peaceful protesters who have been unlawfully detained.

Dialogue and Engagement

The NLC urged the federal government to engage in meaningful dialogue with protesters, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to address the underlying issues. The union warned that failure to do so could lead to a nationwide stay-at-home directive for workers to ensure their safety.

Immediate Relief Measures

The union also called for immediate relief measures to alleviate the suffering of workers and the general populace, including the provision of direct food aid, subsidies on essential commodities, and other social safety nets.

Political Interference

The NLC criticized the federal government for what it described as politically motivated meddling, particularly by the Minister of Labour and the Registrar of Trade Unions. The union demanded that these officials cease their interference in workers’ rights and warned of potential industrial action if their demands are not met.

Solidarity Among Workers

In its final statement, the NLC called on all Nigerian workers to remain united in their demands for better governance, emphasizing that “solidarity is our strength.” The union urged workers to amplify the voices of the people in their pursuit of justice and accountability.
