BadGovernance: Kano Group Threatens Indefinite Protest Following Curfew End

The Northern chapter of the Nigerian Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM), a key participant in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, has threatened to launch an indefinite protest once the curfew in Kano State is fully lifted.

In a telephone interview with PUNCH Online on Saturday, the NPFM Secretary, Anas Adamu, expressed the group’s dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s response to their demands, which have gone unaddressed ten days after the nationwide protests began.

“We will resume the protest immediately after the curfew is lifted, and it will continue indefinitely until the government meets our demands,” Adamu stated. He criticized the current administration, saying, “Nigeria is facing a major governance and economic crisis, which has only been worsened under President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership over the past 15 months.”

Adamu dismissed the President’s recent address to the nation as an “empty speech,” arguing that it failed to address the group’s minimum demands. “We are completely dissatisfied with the President’s speech last Sunday. The curfew is the only thing stopping us, and as soon as it is lifted, we will resume our protest indefinitely until our demands are met,” he said.

He explained that the group had already begun mobilizing its members in preparation for the end of the curfew, ensuring strong participation in the upcoming protest. Adamu emphasized that the NPFM remains committed to peaceful protest and condemned any acts of violence, looting, or property destruction.

“We support the government in prosecuting those who turned the protest violent because that was never the intention of our movement,” Adamu said. He also called for the immediate release of peaceful protesters who were arrested during the recent hunger protest.

Addressing the controversy over some protesters flying Russian flags, Adamu defended the actions, stating, “There is nothing wrong with flying foreign flags during protests. We will soon issue a statement clarifying our stance on this matter.”

The NPFM’s position highlights the growing tension in Kano and underscores the group’s resolve to continue its protest until their grievances are addressed.
