Lukman: Hunger Protests Enough Reason to Impeach Tinubu, State Governors

Salihu Moh. Lukman, former National Vice Chairman (Northwest) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that the recent nationwide protests against hunger and poor governance are sufficient grounds for the impeachment of President Bola Tinubu and some state governors. Lukman criticized the administration’s handling of the protests and suggested that the failure to engage with the organizers has left citizens exposed to worsening conditions.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, Lukman disclosed that the organizers of the protests are considering October 1 for the resumption of demonstrations. He condemned the government’s attempt to discredit the protests by accusing the opposition of sponsoring them, noting that it is legitimate for the opposition to challenge a ruling party that fails to meet the expectations of the electorate.

Lukman argued that if Nigeria’s democratic institutions, such as political parties and the National Assembly, were functioning properly, President Tinubu and several state governors would be prime candidates for immediate impeachment. He criticized the National Assembly as a “rubber stamp” and described political parties as ineffective, contributing to the growing frustration and desperation among Nigerians.

He also pointed to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) reluctance to register new political parties as a barrier to democratic change in leadership, further diminishing hopes for the country’s future.

Lukman identified the withdrawal of petroleum subsidies and the floating of the Naira as key triggers for Nigeria’s current economic difficulties, leading to inflationary pressures. He criticized the Tinubu administration for failing to provide a clear policy response, instead urging citizens to be patient without offering a timeline for when the situation might improve.

He warned that unless Nigerian political leaders and parties establish strong connections with influential grassroots movements like the #EndBadGovernance protests, the country’s democracy remains at risk. Lukman concluded by urging leaders to demonstrate compassion and reconsider some of their policies to alleviate the harsh conditions facing citizens.
