Nigeria to Begin Local Production of Military Hardware – Matawalle

Nigeria is poised to achieve self-sufficiency in the local production of military hardware, according to the Minister of Defence, Bello Matawalle. Speaking on Monday during a press briefing, the minister highlighted this milestone as part of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria’s (DICON) 60th-anniversary celebrations.

Matawalle emphasized that DICON, through collaboration and innovation, has become a pivotal player in the country’s defence sector. As the corporation continues to evolve, its role will be increasingly vital to Nigeria’s national security and economic growth.

A key feature of the anniversary celebration is the inaugural Africa Defence Industries Conference (ADIC), set to take place from Wednesday to Thursday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. Matawalle described the conference as a premier platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to collaborate, share insights, and explore the future of defence technology in Africa.

“The ADIC, themed ‘DICON @ 60: Future Frontiers in Africa’s Defence Technology,’ underscores our commitment to advancing defence capabilities through strategic partnerships, innovation, and technological advancements,” said Matawalle.

The minister also highlighted the potential impact of the newly enacted DICON Act 2023, which he believes will significantly contribute to Nigeria’s national development and security. The Act is expected to boost foreign exchange earnings through the local production of defence equipment, create jobs for skilled Nigerians, and reduce capital flight to foreign countries.

“DICON was established in 1964 and has been at the forefront of Nigeria’s defence manufacturing, contributing significantly to national security and technological advancement. This 60th anniversary marks a significant milestone in our journey of innovation, resilience, and dedication to the defence needs of our nation,” Matawalle stated.

Reflecting on DICON’s history, the minister noted that the corporation started modestly with the production of small arms and ammunition but has since expanded into the manufacture of military vehicles, artillery, and other defence equipment. Despite facing challenges, DICON has persevered, driven by its commitment to self-reliance and national security.

To further bolster innovation, Matawalle invited startups, research institutions, and innovators to participate in the Defence Innovation Challenge, aimed at enhancing national and regional security.

The anniversary celebrations, which began on August 9, mark a new chapter for DICON as a Military Industrial Complex, following the recent signing of the new DICON Act by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 23, 2023. Matawalle extended an invitation to all stakeholders, partners, and the public to join in commemorating this significant occasion.
