In response to the escalating cost of foodstuffs in Sokoto State, the state government has announced plans to procure 300 truckloads of rice at subsidized rates for its residents.
Speaking to journalists after the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Local Government, Ibrahim Adare, expressed the government’s concern over the financial hardships currently affecting the people of Sokoto State and the country at large.
Adare revealed that the government has approved the purchase of 300 truckloads of rice, which will be offered to residents at a significant discount—approximately 45% below the prevailing market price.
“The Sokoto State government, under the leadership of Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, is committed to easing the burden on residents,” Adare said. “As part of this effort, we have decided to procure 300 truckloads of rice, which will be distributed across the state’s 244 wards. Each ward will receive one truckload, and the rice will be sold at a subsidized rate.”
Adare explained that the government would cover 55% of the cost, reducing the price of a bag of rice from the current market price of ₦86,000 to between ₦40,000 and ₦45,000.
The commissioner emphasized that the initiative is inclusive, stating, “This measure is intended for everyone in the state, regardless of tribe or political affiliation. Whether you’re a member of the PDP, APC, Labour, or even APGA, you are eligible to purchase the rice at the ward level.”
The state government has allocated over ₦14 billion for the rice procurement and plans to establish a monitoring committee to oversee the distribution and ensure the program achieves its intended purpose.
