Gombe Govt Forms Standing Committee on New Minimum Wage

Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State has announced the establishment of a standing committee dedicated to addressing the implementation of the new national minimum wage within the state.

Last July, Governor Yahaya expressed concerns about the feasibility of Gombe State adopting the recently approved ₦70,000 minimum wage. However, in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Ismaila Misilli, it was confirmed that the state is actively working towards implementing the wage increase.

The governor made this announcement following a courtesy visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima. According to the statement, the standing committee, led by Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau, is currently collaborating with labor unions to explore effective strategies for implementing the new wage structure.

The statement read in part: “Most states have set up committees; in Gombe, we have a standing committee headed by the Deputy Governor. They are working with the labor unions to ensure that we do the right thing.

“It is a law, but implementation normally involves consequential adjustment, and each state has to follow the process properly to get it right.”
