Gombe State Governor, Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya, has emphasized that the implementation of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage must be accompanied by a consequential adjustment to ensure fairness and accuracy in its application.
Governor Yahaya made this statement over the weekend while addressing State House correspondents following a meeting with Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He highlighted that his administration has already established a committee, led by his deputy, to oversee the implementation of the new minimum wage. The governor underscored the importance of each state handling the process meticulously, especially regarding the necessary adjustments that should come with the wage increase.
When questioned about Gombe State’s preparedness for the new wage policy, Governor Yahaya responded, “Most states have established committees for this purpose. In Gombe, we have had a standing committee in place since 2020, chaired by the deputy governor. They are actively working with labor unions and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth implementation. As per the Senate President, it is a legal requirement.”
He further reiterated that the implementation of the new minimum wage in Gombe State would be accompanied by the required consequential adjustments, stressing the need for a proper process to ensure accuracy and success.
The ₦70,000 minimum wage is set to replace the previous ₦30,000 wage, whose implementation period expired on April 18, 2024. The new wage structure, along with its consequential adjustments, is expected to take effect in May 2024.
