Incompetent Politicians on Power Pushing Nigeria Deeper into Poverty – Ex-Gov Duke

Former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, has called on Nigeria’s political class to take decisive actions to restore hope and pride among the nation’s youth. Speaking at the 2024 Teens Career Conference in Abuja, Duke lamented that the country’s political arena has been overtaken by “quacks,” who have degraded politics to its lowest level.

“Many quacks are involved in politics right now, bringing it down to the lowest level,” Duke remarked in an interview with journalists at the event, which was organized by The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)–The Everlasting Arm Parish, Garki. The conference, themed ‘The Power of Music,’ aimed to inspire Nigerian youth to pursue meaningful careers.

Duke expressed concern that many young Nigerians have lost faith in their country’s future and are seeking better opportunities abroad. He emphasized the need to rid the political sphere of individuals who view politics as merely a means of livelihood, rather than as a platform for service.

“If politics is approached as a means of service, politicians can become role models and create hope. Hope is a powerful, enduring force that can assure young people that their future will be brighter,” Duke said. “Politics has the potential to be the most elevating vocation, but currently, it is filled with quacks who have dragged it down. When politics is done right, it elevates everything – from healthcare to livelihoods. The poor state of the country is a direct result of poor political leadership. With the right politicians, we would have the right country.”

Duke also addressed the issue of rising inflation in Nigeria, attributing it to the high cost of energy. He urged the political class to address the country’s energy crisis by harnessing gas flaring to support the economy.

In a message to Nigerian youth, Duke encouraged them to stay focused and strive to leave a lasting, positive legacy. He reminded them that their presence in Nigeria at this time is not accidental but part of a greater purpose.

Eva Azodoh, the pastor in charge of the parish, also spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of decent role models for young Nigerians. He noted that the conference aimed to connect teenagers and young people with honorable individuals they could emulate.

“We wanted to bring together people who have achieved success through hard work and integrity, so that young people can see that it is possible to succeed honestly and with integrity,” Azodoh said. He pointed to the presence of Duke, esteemed clergy members like Kenneth Ozioma, and the talented 15-year-old Damilade Adepegba, as examples of the kind of role models the conference sought to showcase.

“You do not have to be a deviant to become a role model. Success does not require compromising your values or conforming to negative stereotypes,” Azodoh added.
