BREAKING: NLC President Summoned by Police Over Alleged Terrorism Financing

The Nigeria Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for questioning over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and related offenses.

The invitation, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, warned that a warrant of arrest would be issued if Ajaero fails to comply.

The letter stated: “This office is investigating a case of Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion, and Cybercrime in which you have been implicated.”

Ajaero is required to report for an interview on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, at 10:00 AM, at Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction, Abuja. The letter warned that failure to comply would result in the issuance of an arrest warrant.

Attempts to reach Ajaero for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

PUNCH Online reports that the NLC has accused the government of targeting the organization, following a recent raid on its headquarters by security forces.

In a press conference held in Abuja last Thursday, NLC leaders rejected the police’s explanation for the raid, demanding an apology, the return of seized items, and the release of detained individuals.

The NLC also condemned what it described as government interference in its internal affairs, including a proposed reduction in the tenure of trade union leaders, arguing that such actions violate labor laws and international conventions.

The police previously claimed that the raid on NLC headquarters was part of an effort to apprehend an international terrorist suspect, a justification the NLC dismissed as a cover-up, citing inconsistencies in the police’s account.
