Nigeria Receives $27 Million in Humanitarian Aid from U.S. Govt

The U.S. government has unveiled a $27 million humanitarian aid package aimed at supporting vulnerable populations in Nigeria, particularly in the face of escalating food insecurity and the impacts of climate change.

This announcement was made by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja. The aid package is part of a broader $536 million humanitarian effort directed toward Sub-Saharan Africa by the U.S. government.

According to the U.S. Mission, the funds will be disbursed through the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, as well as USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. This contribution elevates the total U.S. humanitarian assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa in Fiscal Year 2024 to nearly $3.7 billion.

The aid is intended to address the urgent needs of vulnerable groups across the region, including refugees displaced by war and terrorism, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, stateless individuals, and others affected by conflict. The initiative will concentrate on crises in the Sahel and other critical areas, aiming to support sustainable solutions such as voluntary returns and refugee integration.

U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, highlighted the significance of the new funding, emphasizing its role in providing life-saving assistance and protection to those in need. “This assistance will make a tangible difference in the lives of those most in need in Nigeria and across the continent,” said Ambassador Mills. “The $27 million in aid underscores the United States’ steadfast commitment to supporting Nigeria in its efforts to tackle humanitarian challenges, particularly in building resilience against food insecurity and climate change.”

This aid package reaffirms the U.S. government’s dedication to standing with Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African nations in their ongoing efforts to address pressing humanitarian issues.
