NNPP Orders Aspiring Chairmen, Councillors to Resign Ahead of Kano LG Polls

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State has issued a directive requiring all aspiring Caretaker Chairmen and Councillors across the state’s 44 local governments to resign from their current positions by the end of this month if they intend to contest in the upcoming local government elections.

Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, the Chairman of the NNPP in Kano, announced this decision during a press briefing in Kano on Tuesday. He emphasized that the directive is aimed at allowing the aspirants ample time to prepare for the elections, which the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has scheduled for November 30.

Dungurawa also revealed the party’s nomination fees for the elections, setting the cost for chairmanship aspirants at ₦500,000 for the nomination form, with an additional ₦100,000 as an expression of interest fee. For those seeking councillorship positions, the nomination form will cost ₦150,000, with a ₦50,000 fee for expression of interest. He noted that the party set these “moderate fees” in consideration of the current economic challenges facing the country.

Furthermore, Dungurawa expressed support for KANSIEC’s prescribed fees, which are set at ₦10 million for chairmanship and ₦5 million for councillorship, describing these amounts as reasonable. He argued that individuals aspiring to hold these local government positions should demonstrate financial stability, indicating their ability to manage public resources effectively.

Regarding women’s participation in the upcoming elections, Dungurawa stated that the NNPP is actively encouraging its female members to run for office, underscoring the party’s commitment to inclusive governance.
