Zamfara Distributes Free Fertilizer to 40,000 Farmers Amid Food Crisis

In it’s effort to bolster agricultural productivity and support local farmers, the Zamfara State Government has distributed 80,000 bags of assorted fertilizers to 40,000 farmers across the state at no cost. The distribution, which took place on Tuesday in Gusau, is part of the state government’s effort to mitigate the impact of economic challenges and enhance food production during this year’s rainy season.

Governor Dauda Lawal, who oversaw the distribution, emphasized that the initiative is designed to alleviate the financial burden on farmers during a time of significant economic difficulty in Nigeria. By providing fertilizer free of charge, the state government aims to empower farmers to increase their crop yields, thereby contributing to food security in Zamfara.

“The current economic hardship has made it difficult for many farmers to afford essential farming inputs. This free distribution of fertilizer is our way of supporting them and ensuring that they can continue to cultivate their lands effectively,” Governor Lawal stated.

He urged the beneficiaries to utilize the fertilizer on their farms rather than selling it at reduced prices. The governor highlighted the importance of the gesture, noting that it could significantly boost agricultural output if used appropriately.

To ensure the proper distribution and usage of the fertilizers, the state government has established a committee of trusted individuals. This committee is tasked with overseeing the distribution process and preventing any potential diversion of the commodity.

“I want to use this opportunity to call on those entrusted with the responsibility of distributing the fertilizer to carry out their duties with integrity and the fear of God,” Governor Lawal warned. “I will not hesitate to take decisive action against anyone found guilty of misconduct during this exercise.”

Governor Lawal also called on the beneficiaries to honor the state’s commitment by applying the fertilizer directly to their farms, thus maximizing the intended impact of the program.

Beyond the fertilizer distribution, Governor Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating banditry in Zamfara. He noted that ensuring the security of the state is crucial to enabling farmers to work their land without fear, which in turn will contribute to the overall economic stability of the region.
