Kano Govt Inaugurates Committee to Resolve Yoruba Community Conflict

The Kano State Government has established a reconciliatory committee to address the escalating conflict within the Yoruba community in the state. The committee was officially inaugurated on Thursday by Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government, on behalf of Governor Abba Yusuf.

Expressing concern over the leadership crisis within the Yoruba community, Dr. Bichi emphasized the urgent need for resolution. “The state government is deeply troubled by the ongoing leadership crisis among members of the Yoruba community, which necessitates immediate intervention,” he stated.

The committee, composed of academics and a representative from the Kano Emirate Council, has been tasked with resolving the dispute between the Oba group and the Aare group. The committee’s mandate includes inviting the conflicting parties for dialogue, gathering written and oral submissions from relevant associations, interest groups, and individuals, and engaging in discussions with organizations like the Kano Emirate Council.

Additionally, the committee is charged with identifying both the immediate and underlying causes of the crisis and providing solutions and recommendations. The committee has been given a four-week deadline to submit its report to the state government for further action.

Speaking on behalf of the committee members, Chairman Prof. Usman Muhammad assured that the committee would employ effective conflict resolution strategies to address the issue. Co-chairman Dr. Ransom Bello expressed gratitude to the state government for entrusting them with this responsibility.

In his remarks, Abdussalam Abiola, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Inter-community Relations for Yoruba Affairs, urged the Yoruba community to cooperate fully with the committee and make the necessary sacrifices to ensure peace in Kano State.
