The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command reported on Sunday that two police officers were killed and three others sustained serious injuries in an unprovoked attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group.
According to the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred at a police checkpoint near Wuse Junction. She stated, “Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the FCT Command were attacked by members of the proscribed group. Tragically, two officers lost their lives, and three others were left unconscious and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Additionally, three police patrol vehicles were set ablaze.”
The assailants were reportedly armed with machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices, including locally made bombs in bottles filled with kerosene.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, condemned the attack, describing it as a senseless and unprovoked assault on law enforcement officers. He assured the public that those responsible would be brought to justice.
“The situation is currently under control, and normalcy has been restored. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” SP Adeh added.
Authorities confirmed that several arrests have already been made in connection with the incident.
