Jigawa: Police Arrest Tea Vendor for Allegedly Killing Teenager Over Stolen Bread

A tea vendor in Jigawa has been detained by the police for allegedly beating a 20-year-old man to death in Dutse, following accusations that the victim had stolen bread, milk, noodles, and petrol.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday. He noted that the suspect will face charges in court once the investigation is concluded.

According to the PPRO, the incident occurred on August 19, when the 40-year-old suspect, a resident of Sararai Village in Dutse, allegedly tied up the victim and subjected him to severe torture, leading to the teenager’s death. The police were alerted to the crime and quickly apprehended the suspect at the scene. The victim was transported to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital for medical attention, but was declared dead upon arrival by the attending physician.

The police handed over the teenager’s remains to his family for burial. During interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse, the suspect reportedly confessed that the deceased had provoked him by stealing from him, despite previous reports of the theft to the victim’s parents. He admitted to taking matters into his own hands by tying up the teenager and beating him.

The investigation continues as authorities prepare to bring the suspect before the court.
