Afenifere Urges FG to Allow NYSC Members Serve in their Zones

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has called on the Federal Government to permit National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to serve within their respective geopolitical zones. This recommendation comes in response to the rising cases of kidnapping and banditry across the country.

Afenifere commended the Federal Government and security agencies for their efforts in rescuing NYSC members who were abducted while traveling from Akwa Ibom to Sokoto State. However, the organization emphasized the need for better equipping security personnel to enhance their effectiveness in combating these threats.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, Afenifere reiterated its long-standing position that NYSC participants should be allowed to serve within their geopolitical zones. The group argued that this approach would reduce the risks associated with traveling to different parts of the country, especially given the current security situation.

Ajayi pointed out that while there have been some successes in addressing security challenges, these achievements are overshadowed by the persistent and widespread issues of banditry and kidnapping. He highlighted the increasing fear among citizens, noting that kidnappers and bandits now often target groups and high-profile individuals.

Afenifere also drew attention to the underlying factors contributing to the rise in banditry and kidnapping, including the prevalence of ungoverned or poorly governed spaces where the government’s control is weak. The organization warned that the lack of government presence in these areas leaves residents vulnerable to exploitation by criminal elements, including terrorists and traffickers.

Ajayi further noted that the porous borders of Nigeria have exacerbated the situation by allowing the influx of small arms and light weapons from the Sahel region, thereby increasing the incentives for criminal activities. Additionally, he pointed out that illegal mining operations have led to poor governance in affected areas, resulting in displacement, rising unemployment, and the recruitment of frustrated individuals into criminal activities.

Afenifere concluded by urging the government to take more decisive action in addressing these root causes of insecurity and to consider the safety of NYSC members by allowing them to serve closer to home.
