Strike: Federal Govt Sets Up Panel to Review ASUU Demands

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education, has established a sub-committee to address the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This development comes as both parties agreed to reconvene on September 6, 2024, to further discussions.

The decisions were made following a two-and-a-half-hour closed-door meeting held on Wednesday at the Ministry of Education in Abuja. The meeting was attended by ASUU leadership, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, and other ministry officials.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Minister Mamman announced the formation of a sub-committee tasked with reviewing ASUU’s demands and ensuring that all outstanding issues are resolved.

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed optimism that the issues could be resolved before the next meeting in September. “We have discussed all the issues and given the government time until our next meeting to address them. We are committed to protecting the interests of Nigerian students by seeking an amicable resolution,” Osodeke stated.

ASUU’s demands include a comprehensive overhaul of the university system, focusing on improved infrastructure, enhanced academic freedom, and a sustainable funding model. The union is also calling for the release of revitalization funds for universities, the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, and the disbursement of earned allowances for university lecturers.
