₦70,000 Minimum Wage to Take Effect for Kebbi Civil Servants

Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has announced the state government’s readiness to implement the newly approved national minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants. This announcement was made during a courtesy visit by the State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.

Governor Idris dismissed recent criticisms suggesting delays in wage payments, labeling them as baseless. He clarified that the Federal Government has not yet finalized its implementation, which has led to the perceived delay. He assured the public that his administration is fully committed to improving workers’ welfare and will not be deterred by any attempts to undermine this commitment.

“The notion that we are stalling the implementation of the new wage is unfounded,” Dr. Idris stated. He promised that the new wage structure would be implemented as soon as the necessary frameworks are established, with ongoing dialogue with the NLC to ensure a smooth transition.

Addressing concerns regarding the annual development levy of ₦500, Dr. Idris explained that this deduction has been a longstanding practice since the era of the defunct Sokoto State. He noted that the total annual collection of about ₦11 million is within legal bounds and contributes to state development.

The Governor also highlighted the nearing completion of the new state secretariat complex, which is expected to enhance administrative efficiency by bringing various government agencies under one roof.

NLC Chairman, Comrade Murtala Usman, praised Dr. Idris for his labor-friendly policies, including the appointment of two labor leaders as permanent secretaries. He commended the Governor’s efforts in driving significant infrastructural development across Kebbi State.

Dr. Idris reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with labor unions, emphasizing that his administration remains dedicated to both the welfare of workers and the overall progress of the state.
