Zamfara Flood: Over 10,000 Displaced, Farmlands Destroyed, Says Emir

A devastating flood in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State has displaced over 10,000 people and destroyed farmlands and properties worth millions of naira following weeks of intense rainfall.

The Emir of Gummi, Justice Hassan Lawal, revealed the extent of the disaster on Saturday during a visit by Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, who conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas. The governor visited both Gummi town and the Gayari community to gauge the damage firsthand.

During the briefing, the Emir provided a detailed account of the situation. “Following our discussions with experts, a permanent solution seems feasible. According to their assessment, 10,291 households were affected. We expect the governor will see the impact for himself during his visit,” he said.

In response, Governor Lawal expressed his sympathy for the flood victims and announced an immediate relief package, which includes ₦100,000 in cash assistance and the distribution of 10,000 bags of assorted grains, along with mosquito nets and blankets.

The governor also outlined plans for long-term flood management, including the construction of new drainage systems and the repair and potential expansion of existing dams.

“Today, I am in Gummi Local Government Area to offer my condolences and conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the communities devastated by the flooding caused by heavy rainfall last week,” Governor Lawal stated.

“I would like to inform you that I have donated 10,000 bags of food, including rice, maize, and millet, for distribution among the flood victims. The trucks carrying these supplies are already en route to Gummi for immediate distribution.

“On behalf of the Zamfara State Government, I am also providing ₦100 million in support for the affected victims. Additionally, all affected individuals will be allocated land away from the danger zone to rebuild their homes,” he added.

Residents of Gummi expressed their gratitude to the governor for his visit, noting that it provided them with hope amidst the devastation.

“We are happy to see the governor visit us. This shows he cares for us. Two-thirds of the people in this community are now homeless because of the flood. The governor’s visit alone has given us hope,” one resident said.

Many displaced individuals have sought refuge in government buildings, primary and secondary schools, and even a petrol station.

To ensure the effective distribution of relief materials, the state government has established a committee led by elder statesman Salihu Gumi. This committee will oversee the distribution process and ensure that all affected individuals receive the necessary assistance.
