The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has dismissed claims from some Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates that the board is responsible for their inability to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
JAMB clarified that it does not have authority over HND admissions, as its mandate is limited to undergraduate admissions and National Diploma (ND) courses.
In a statement issued on Monday, JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, referenced Section 5(2) of the Board’s establishing law, which clearly states that JAMB is not responsible for examinations or admission processes for postgraduate courses or other tertiary institution programs beyond its stipulated jurisdiction.
Benjamin explained that some students had been admitted into National Diploma programs without the Board’s knowledge, but JAMB later condoned and endorsed those admissions.
“Many students were admitted into their institutions for the National Diploma without the Board’s knowledge. However, the Board graciously condoned and endorsed these admissions for the ND program, and that was the extent of our involvement with such candidates,” the statement read.
JAMB emphasized that the subsequent admission of these students into HND programs falls outside its mandate. “Their admission to HND is unknown and irrelevant to the Board’s mandate. Therefore, blaming the Board for issues beyond its control is unfounded,” Benjamin added.
The Board also warned that some of these candidates might have crossed into criminal activities, which JAMB intends to address appropriately in due course.
