BREAKING: IGP Egbetokun Receives Three-Year Tenure Extension

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a three-year extension of the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, despite his impending retirement at the age of 60, which he is set to reach on September 4, 2024.

Sources from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) disclosed this development. According to these officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, presented Egbetokun with a letter confirming the extension on Monday.

A senior security officer within the SGF Office also corroborated this information, confirming that the IGP received his letter of tenure extension from Akume earlier that morning.

This decision follows the Senate’s recent passage of a bill amending the Police Act of 2020. The amendment introduces a new provision that allows police officers to serve for 40 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.

Egbetokun, who was appointed as IGP in June 2023, would have otherwise been due for retirement on September 4.
