The Minister of Defence, Bello Matawalle, has urged residents of Sokoto State to report any unemployed individuals living flamboyantly to security agencies. Speaking at the Sokoto State Governor’s office, Matawalle expressed concern that such persons, when investigated, could potentially be informants for bandits who are destabilizing the region.
Matawalle visited Sokoto alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu to intensify efforts to end banditry in Northern Nigeria. During his address, the minister emphasized the critical role of community cooperation in combating insecurity, urging residents to provide timely information to security forces.
“Just as we did during my tenure as Governor of Zamfara State, I appeal to the people of Sokoto State to consistently share information with security agents,” Matawalle said. “If you notice someone who is unemployed yet suddenly acquires luxury cars or spends money extravagantly, do not hesitate to report them. Such individuals may be aiding bandits.”
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating criminal elements, stating, “We are here to crush these bad elements in our midst, and by the special grace of God, we will succeed.”
Matawalle also highlighted ongoing efforts to bolster security in Sokoto, noting that 200 individuals from each of the state’s 23 local government areas have been recruited into the Sokoto Community Guard Corps to support existing security operations.
Addressing the Governor, Matawalle assured him, “Your Excellency, we are working tirelessly behind the scenes. Security matters are sensitive and not for public discussion, but I am confident that with our presence today, the people of Sokoto can sleep more peacefully, knowing that you are a leader who delivers on his promises.”
He concluded by reiterating the state government’s continued support for security agencies, particularly the troops of Operation Hadarin Daji, in their mission to secure Sokoto State.
