NBA Offers Free Legal Representation to End Bad Governance Protesters

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has extended free legal representation to #EndBadGovernance protesters facing court cases across the country. This initiative was announced by Mazi Afam Osigwe, a prominent member of the NBA, via his X handle on Wednesday.

Osigwe revealed that the NBA has directed its branches to closely monitor legal proceedings involving the protesters. He also introduced a Pro Bono support initiative aimed at providing legal aid to protesters who lack representation.

“I have instructed all branches of the Nigerian Bar Association @NigBarAssoc to oversee the trials of #EndBadGovernance protesters. Additionally, we have launched a Pro Bono support initiative to assist those without legal representation,” Osigwe stated.

He further explained that the NBA’s Citizens’ Liberties Committee (NBA-CLC) has been charged with collaborating with the chairmen and human rights committees of NBA branches in regions where protesters are being prosecuted. This collaboration is intended to ensure that no defendant faces injustice.

“The NBA legal team will continue to monitor court proceedings to ensure that trials are conducted with strict adherence to due process, safeguarding the legal rights of all defendants. We are committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the human rights of those involved,” Osigwe added.

The announcement follows reports that several #EndBadGovernance protesters have been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre, facing charges of treason. Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered their remand on Monday, pending a hearing and ruling on their bail application scheduled for September 11, 2024. The protesters have pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge of terrorism brought against them by the Federal Government.
