The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an “immediate reversal” of the recent increase in petrol prices across the country.
On Tuesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised the pump price of petrol from ₦568 to between ₦855 and ₦897 per litre, depending on the location.
In response, the NLC took to its X (formerly Twitter) page on Tuesday night, demanding a reversal of the price hike. The post read: “We demand the immediate reversal of the latest increase in the pump price of PMS across the country.”
Earlier that day, NLC President Joe Ajaero issued a statement accusing the Federal Government of betraying the labour movement. He reiterated the union’s demand for a rollback of the petrol price increase, along with the release of individuals arrested during recent protests.
Ajaero’s statement outlined further demands, including an end to what the NLC describes as the “indiscriminate arrest and detention of citizens on trumped-up charges” and the reversal of a 250% electricity tariff hike. He also called for the cessation of government policies that “engender hunger and insecurity” and criticized the alleged “hijack” of the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s duties.
“We are guided by our belief in our country and the need to secure and sustain its sovereignty, integrity, and welfare of the people,” Ajaero concluded.
