NYSC Cracks Down And HND Holders Who Defaulted on IT

Numerous holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) certificates attending the ongoing National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camps have been denied registration due to their failure to present valid Industrial Training (IT) certificates.

In Nigeria, tertiary education comprises both academic training for degree or diploma certifications and, in the case of HND programs, mandatory Industrial Training. Unlike some degree programs where IT is optional, it is a critical component for HND courses. Promotion from National Diploma (ND) to Higher National Diploma hinges on the completion of IT, and the certificate obtained from this training is required for NYSC registration.

It is perplexing that certain institutions graduate students with HND certificates without ensuring they have completed the necessary IT. This oversight raises significant concerns about the quality of education these institutions provide.

Industrial Training is a cornerstone of diploma education, particularly because diploma programs, unlike most university courses that are heavily theory-based, emphasize practical skills. The IT component is designed to expose students to real-world work environments, which often differ significantly from classroom learning. Through IT, students gain hands-on experience with industry operations, working alongside professionals and interacting with industrial machinery and technology. Many students return from their IT placements with a newfound understanding of the gap between academic theory and practical application.

The NYSC’s decision to reject HND holders without IT certificates is commendable, as it ensures that only properly trained and qualified graduates participate in the scheme. However, this issue should not stop at the camp gates. The NYSC should compile a list of institutions that have graduated HND students without verified IT exposure. These institutions are contributing to the production of poorly educated and potentially unemployable graduates.

We acknowledge the difficulties students face in securing IT placements, especially given the current economic challenges. Many industries and businesses, including long-established multinational companies, are closing down due to unfavorable economic conditions. This situation further complicates the efforts of students to find suitable IT opportunities.

The State and Federal Ministries of Education must collaborate with HND-awarding institutions to ensure that students have access to IT programs. The digital revolution offers new avenues for students to gain practical experience, and any registered and certified business capable of providing relevant training should be considered for IT placements. Institutions must support their students in securing these essential experiences and the accompanying certification.

We urge the rejected NYSC candidates to fulfill this requirement so they can complete their service year and fully benefit from the program.
