The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a temporary injunction preventing the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from charging ₦10 million and ₦5 million fees on candidates contesting in the upcoming local government elections. The fees were meant for those running for the positions of Chairman/Vice Chairman and Councillor, respectively.
Justice Emeka Nwite granted the order on Wednesday in response to a lawsuit filed by three political parties: Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP). KANSIEC is the sole defendant in the case.
A copy of the court order, made available to journalists on Thursday, reads: “An order of interim injunction restraining the defendant from imposing and/or collecting the sums of N10 million and N5 million from contestants for the offices of Chairman/Vice Chairman and Councillorship in the forthcoming local government election to be conducted on November 30, 2024, or any earlier date fixed by the defendant, pending the hearing and determination of the originating summons filed by the plaintiffs.”
The matter has been adjourned to September 25, 2024, for a hearing.
