Sokoto Makes U-turn Says ₦1.2bn is for Drilling New Boreholes, Not Renovation

Following widespread criticism over reports suggesting that ₦1.2 billion was allocated for the renovation of 25 boreholes, the Sokoto State government has clarified the true purpose of the expenditure. According to the government, the funds were spent on drilling new boreholes, not renovating existing ones.

The clarification comes after social media reports, citing Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, claimed that the substantial amount was used for the renovation of boreholes. However, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, issued a statement on Thursday, debunking these claims and labeling them as a misconception fueled by detractors.

“The Sokoto State Government has noted the misunderstanding regarding its efforts to provide potable drinking water to rural communities through the drilling of new boreholes,” Bawa said. He added that contrary to reports suggesting the renovation of existing boreholes in Wurno Local Government, the funds were used to drill 25 solar-powered boreholes in several areas, including Munki, Marnona, Dinawa, Lugu, and Wurno.

The project, carried out in collaboration with the World Bank under the ACReSAL programme, also included perimeter fencing and the construction of a 40-kilometre shelter belt. All of this was completed at a cost of ₦1.2 billion, Bawa explained.

“To be clear, no boreholes existed in these areas prior to this administration. The amount allocated was for new projects aimed at alleviating long-standing water shortages in these communities,” Bawa continued. He emphasized that the administration initiated these projects to address the severe water scarcity that had plagued Wurno Local Government, where residents previously had to travel long distances for water. This shortage had adversely affected school enrolment and retention rates in the area.

Bawa reiterated that Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s decision to drill the solar-powered boreholes, with the support of the World Bank, was a strategic move to address these challenges. “You cannot renovate something that did not exist. There were no boreholes in these communities until now, and the benefits are only being realized thanks to a responsive and dedicated governor,” he stated.

In conclusion, the statement aimed to correct the misinformation and counter what Bawa described as misconceptions spread by those with ill intentions.
