As the Edo 2024 governorship election approaches, Senator Ehigie Uzamere has publicly expressed his support for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, while strongly criticizing the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Johnson Okpebholo. Uzamere, a prominent political figure in Edo State and former senator, spoke extensively in an interview, outlining his reasons for backing Ighodalo and dismissing the candidacies of the other major contenders.
Support for Asue Ighodalo
Uzamere’s endorsement of Asue Ighodalo, whom he describes as the most qualified candidate, stems from his admiration for Ighodalo’s professional accomplishments and vision for the state. He praised Ighodalo’s intelligence, humility, and deep understanding of economic issues, emphasizing that Edo needs a governor with strong economic expertise. According to Uzamere, Ighodalo’s campaign is focused on the issues that matter, positioning him as the candidate best suited to continue the work of outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki.
“Ighodalo is humble, intelligent, and focused on addressing economic challenges,” Uzamere said. “This is not a time for political experimentation, and Ighodalo’s background makes him the best choice for Edo.”
Uzamere also underscored the importance of political rotation, advocating for the governorship to shift from Edo South to Edo Central, and noted that Ighodalo represents this balance.
Criticism of APC and Okpebholo
Uzamere was unequivocal in his criticism of the APC and its candidate, Okpebholo, whom he claimed is ill-prepared for the governorship. “The APC does not have a viable candidate,” Uzamere asserted. “Okpebholo lacks the necessary qualifications and experience to be governor. His candidacy is the result of political maneuvering, not merit.”
Uzamere further criticized Okpebholo’s association with former Edo governor Adams Oshiomhole, suggesting that Oshiomhole is orchestrating the APC campaign for his own benefit. According to Uzamere, Oshiomhole’s outsized influence and his public attacks on prominent Edo leaders have alienated him from the broader political community in the state.
Response to Oshiomhole’s Comments on Obaseki’s Family
Uzamere also addressed a recent controversy sparked by Oshiomhole’s comments on Governor Obaseki’s family, particularly remarks regarding the governor’s childlessness. Uzamere described Oshiomhole as an “unguided missile” and called for widespread condemnation of his remarks, stating that they were disrespectful not only to Obaseki but to women across Nigeria.
“Oshiomhole’s attack on Governor Obaseki and his wife was disgraceful,” Uzamere said. “It is a personal insult that all women, including the First Lady and other national leaders, should condemn.”
Message to Edo Voters
In a direct appeal to voters, Uzamere urged the people of Edo to reject the APC in the upcoming election, framing the choice as clear and straightforward. “Only those who are blind or dumb will vote for the APC,” he remarked. Uzamere encouraged the electorate to support Ighodalo as the candidate capable of building on Obaseki’s legacy and moving Edo State forward.
“My advice to the Binis in Edo South is simple: you’ve done it before by supporting me, and now I ask you to vote for Asue Ighodalo. He is the right person to lead our state into the future.”
As the election date draws near, Uzamere’s comments have sparked widespread discussion, heightening the political tension between the PDP, APC, and other parties vying for control of Edo State.
