NULGE Chairman Slumps, Dies at Filling Station Amid Fuel Scarcity Crisis

The ongoing fuel scarcity crisis in Nigeria has claimed a tragic victim, as Oluwatuyi Olasoji, chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for Akure South Local Government, passed away while waiting to purchase fuel.

Olasoji reportedly collapsed at a filling station in Akure, Ondo State, last week while attempting to buy Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Owo, where he underwent surgery. Despite medical efforts, he passed away on Monday, September 9.

This incident comes amid worsening fuel shortages nationwide, leading to long queues at petrol stations, increased transportation costs, and mounting frustration among commuters.

In response to the crisis, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently assured the public that relief is on the way. “The market has been deregulated, meaning that petrol prices are now determined by market forces rather than the government or NNPC Ltd. Additionally, the exchange rate plays a significant role in influencing these prices,” the NNPCL said in a statement.

Many Nigerians are now pinning their hopes on the Dangote Refinery, which is expected to commence fuel lifting by mid-September, potentially alleviating the severe fuel shortages.
