Politicians, Not Youths, Are Nigeria’s Problem—Peter Obi Urges Media to Fearlessly Expose Ills

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has identified politicians, rather than the youth, as the root cause of Nigeria’s challenges. He emphasized that these politicians have led the country astray, while Nigeria’s youth remain one of the most entrepreneurial populations in the world.

During a visit to News Central on Monday, Obi urged the media to stand firm in exposing the failures of political leaders, reminding them that they play a vital role as the voice of the voiceless. He stressed that the media has a critical responsibility in holding politicians accountable and in revealing the truth to the public.

“The problem of Nigeria is not our youth, who are energetic and entrepreneurial. The issue lies with the politicians who have failed to deliver good governance,” Obi stated. He also warned that rising tribal and religious tensions are being exploited by incompetent politicians to distract from their lack of achievements.

He continued, “We cannot build this country unless everyone contributes and makes sacrifices. The fourth estate [the media] is crucial in exposing the wrongdoings of politicians, as we are the real problem. Politicians often resort to tribal and religious rhetoric because they have nothing to show for their competence. It’s a smokescreen.”

Obi encouraged the media to continue its vital work for the country, envisioning a Nigeria where no one is left behind, and where even “a child of nobody can become somebody.” He urged all Nigerians to work towards a nation that prioritizes merit and progress over divisive politics.
