The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed that 20 chairmanship aspirants in Kano State tested positive for multiple illicit substances during screening for the upcoming local government elections.
According to NDLEA’s Kano State Commander, Abubakar Idris Ahmad, the affected aspirants, all candidates from the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), were found to have used drugs such as opioids, cannabis, benzodiazepines, and nicotine.
Commander Ahmad clarified that no female candidates had tested positive at the time of reporting. However, the screening process is still ongoing, and more aspirants are expected to be tested before the final clearance by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).
KANSIEC has scheduled the local elections for October 26, 2024, with 44 chairmanship positions and 484 councillorship seats up for grabs.
