Presidency Draws Trump Comparison, Says Peter Obi is Nigeria’s Donald Trump

The Presidency of Nigeria has drawn a parallel between Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and former U.S. President Donald Trump. This comparison was made by Temitope Ajayi, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. Ajayi’s comments followed the U.S. presidential debate between Trump, the Republican candidate for the 2024 elections, and Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Ajayi stated, “Peter Obi is the Nigerian version of Donald Trump. Like Trump, Obi employs harsh rhetoric to criticize the country he seeks to lead, using divisive language to energize his supporters.”

During the debate, Harris and Trump exchanged sharp criticisms on various topics, including abortion rights and immigration, in an attempt to sway voters in what is expected to be a closely contested race.

Ajayi praised Harris for her performance, saying, “Kamala Harris prosecuted Trump very well in their first face-to-face debate last night. She convincingly won, leaving no doubt about her capabilities.”

He further noted that Trump was caught off guard by Harris’s strategies, falling into “traps” set by her. Fact-checking reports from the debate revealed that while Harris made one factual error, Trump was found to have made 33 false claims in the 90-minute session.

Media outlets have since highlighted Trump’s reliance on conspiracy theories and falsehoods, particularly regarding the 2020 election and immigration. Despite repeated fact-checking by the debate moderators, Trump persisted with his assertions, including a bizarre claim that immigrants were consuming pets belonging to U.S. residents.

“They’re eating the cats,” Trump alleged. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs — the people who came in — they’re eating the pets of the people that live there. This is what’s happening in our country.” His statement was refuted by the city manager of Springfield, who confirmed that such claims were baseless.

The 2024 U.S. presidential election is set for November 5, 2024.
