Defence Chief Overhauls Zamfara Operations, Deploys Additional Equipment

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has overhauled military operations in Zamfara State in a bid to counter the escalating activities of bandits.

General Musa announced that the operations have been upgraded to a theatre command structure, with General Officers Commanding now serving as component commanders, ensuring improved coordination among security agencies.

This development was disclosed in a statement on Friday by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, following the CDS’s visit to the Governor of Zamfara State.

During the visit, General Musa revealed that the restructured mission has been renamed Operation FANSAN YAMMA. He emphasized that the change in command status would enhance synergy and control among security actors in the state.

“The President has approved the deployment of additional military platforms to bolster the operation and ensure more effective results,” Gusau quoted the CDS as saying.

In his address, General Musa also highlighted the importance of collaboration with state-level security outfits, stressing that the military cannot be everywhere at once. He called for support from the local population, urging residents to refrain from aiding the bandits and instead provide critical intelligence to security agencies.

The Defence Chief assured the governor that farmers in Zamfara would be protected from bandit interference, allowing them to cultivate their crops freely and help alleviate the current economic hardship. He pledged that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) would ensure a secure environment for farming, facilitating a successful harvest season.

Additionally, General Musa vowed to bring all notorious bandits to justice swiftly, expressing confidence in the capabilities of his newly appointed security leadership in the state. He further urged troops to maintain a positive mindset and reassured them of continued support, including improved welfare and immediate recognition of their bravery.

“The CDS has committed to providing all necessary platforms to win this fight and will focus on the welfare of the troops, ensuring that their efforts are recognized and rewarded promptly,” Gusau added.
