Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic boat mishap that occurred in Gummi Local Government Area, describing the incident as a monumental loss.
In the early hours of Sunday, a boat carrying over 40 people capsized in the Bakin Kasuwa River, located in the Uban Dawaki ward of Gummi. The vessel reportedly lost control, resulting in the drowning of many passengers.
A statement released by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, conveyed Governor Lawal’s deep condolences to the affected families and the entire community. The Governor called the incident a devastating disaster for the state.
The Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA) has been directed to immediately launch rescue and recovery operations. The Governor’s statement emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We woke up to the heartbreaking news of a boat accident in the Bakin Kasuwa River, resulting in the tragic loss of over 40 lives.”
Governor Lawal has also instructed ZEMA to assess the extent of the damage and provide prompt assistance to the survivors and families of the victims. In addition, the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Relief Matters has been tasked with coordinating all relief efforts to ensure swift support.
The Governor offered prayers for the souls of the deceased and expressed his heartfelt sympathies to their grieving families. He further reassured the public of the government’s commitment to preventing future incidents of this nature.
