Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has warned that civil servants could face significant setbacks if the opposition secures victory in the upcoming 2024 governorship election. He made this statement during a thank-you meeting with public servants held on Tuesday in Benin City.
Obaseki emphasized the strides made in modernizing the state’s civil service through technology-driven initiatives, urging voters to safeguard this progress by making informed decisions at the polls. He cautioned that electing inexperienced leaders could have disastrous effects on Edo’s development.
Praising the governorship candidate Asue Ighodalo, Obaseki described him as a capable successor who would build on his administration’s accomplishments. He encouraged voters to not only vote but also ensure the security of their votes for the continued progress of Edo State.
“I came to sincerely thank you all. We’ve achieved so much together, but this journey must not stop. The engine of development must keep running,” Obaseki stated. “Making the right decision is crucial. We cannot afford any mistakes on Saturday.”
He criticized those seeking power at all costs, labeling them as unqualified and lacking the necessary experience. “Those who wish to take over have never worked in meaningful positions and are uneducated. The risk is allowing individuals without ideas or competence to lead. This isn’t just about Obaseki, but about democracy and development,” the governor said.
Obaseki stressed that civil servants would bear the brunt of poor leadership first. “Any mistake you make in this election will affect you before anyone else. You will be the first victims,” he warned.
In his remarks, Asue Ighodalo commended Obaseki’s transformative work in the civil service, describing Edo’s public service as the best in Nigeria. “Obaseki has done exceptionally well, and I intend to continue from where he leaves off. My focus will remain on making Edo a progressive state, with civil servants as a key priority,” Ighodalo assured.
Ighodalo also urged citizens to vote in large numbers and protect their votes to ensure Edo’s future prosperity.
The State Head of Service, Mr. Anthony Okungbowa, thanked Governor Obaseki for his remarkable reforms in the civil service and prayed for continued blessings. He also expressed appreciation to Ighodalo for taking the time to address the workers.
Following the meeting, Governor Obaseki inaugurated a newly installed traffic light at the Third East/Sakponba Road Junction.
