FCT Civil Service Launches Regularization Exercise for Staff

The Head of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Civil Service Commission, Samuel Atang, has called on employees of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to actively participate in the ongoing staff appointment regularization exercise.

Atang made this statement during the formal launch of the regularization exercise held at the FCDA Conference Hall on Wednesday. He emphasized the significance of the initiative in ensuring accurate staff data and fostering a unified workforce within the FCTA.

He assured the full support and cooperation of the FCTA to ensure the success of the exercise, underscoring its role in providing staff with a clear sense of identity. Atang also cautioned against non-compliance by Secretariats, Departments, and Agencies.

“The exercise we are gathered here for is a critical one, forming the foundation of the new FCT Civil Service. The regularization process and subsequent gazette by the Commission will give all staff a sense of identity,” he said.

Atang reflected on the long-standing desire of FCT civil servants for proper recognition, noting that for nearly two decades, FCTA employees lacked a clear identity within the civil service framework. He highlighted that while Area Council staff had the Area Council Service Commission and Federal staff were governed by the Federal Civil Service Commission, FCTA staff were left in an ambiguous position, with frequent changes in Permanent Secretaries and no clear governing body.

“Today, by the grace of God, the FCT Civil Service Commission has been established through an Act of the National Assembly, signed into law by the President, and officially inaugurated by the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, with the support of presidential approval,” Atang added.

He issued a stern warning, stating, “I will not hesitate to sanction any staff, Secretariat, Department, or Agency that fails to participate in the exercise.”

Additionally, Atang directed that a comprehensive list of all FCTA staff currently on study leave, leave of absence, or other approved courses, along with their Grade Level, designation, and service records, be submitted to his office for onward submission to the FCT Civil Service Commission.

The Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Engr. Emeka Ezeh, expressed gratitude for the support and collaboration of the Head of the FCT Civil Service. He reaffirmed the Commission’s mandate over the appointment, promotion, and discipline of all FCTA staff and urged employees to remain dedicated to their duties. Ezeh also acknowledged the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his role in addressing the long-standing stagnation faced by FCTA staff.
