NECO Summons 40 Schools Over Mass Cheating in SSCE

The National Examination Council (NECO) announced on Thursday that it will summon the management of 40 secondary schools from 17 states for questioning over allegations of mass cheating during the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, made this disclosure during a press conference in Minna, Niger State, where he also announced the release of the 2024 SSCE results.

According to Wushishi, 8,437 candidates were found to have engaged in various forms of malpractice, marking a significant reduction of 30.1% compared to the 12,030 cases recorded in 2023. He emphasized that the implicated schools would be invited for a review, after which appropriate disciplinary actions would be taken.

Additionally, Wushishi revealed that one school in Ekiti State has been recommended for de-registration due to widespread cheating in two core subjects.

“During the conduct of the 2024 SSCE, 40 schools were identified for mass cheating across 17 states. They will be summoned to the council for further discussions, and appropriate sanctions will follow. One school in Ekiti State has been recommended for de-recognition due to mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject,” Wushishi stated.

In a broader crackdown on examination misconduct, he also announced that 21 supervisors from 12 states are set to be blacklisted for various infractions, including poor supervision, aiding and abetting cheating, abscondment, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence.

Despite these challenges, more than 60% of candidates who sat for the 2024 NECO SSCE passed both English Language and Mathematics.

Wushishi provided a detailed breakdown of the candidates’ performance: “Out of 1,376,423 registered candidates—comprising 706,950 males and 669,473 females—1,367,736 sat for the examination. Of these, 702,112 were males and 665,624 were females. A total of 828,824 candidates, representing 60.55%, obtained five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics. Additionally, 1,147,597 candidates, or 83.90%, earned five credits or more, regardless of English and Mathematics.”
