The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a sweeping victory in the Imo State local government elections held on Saturday, clinching all 305 councilorship seats and 27 chairmanship positions.
Announcing the results at the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) headquarters on Sunday, the Commission’s Chairman, Mr. Charles Ejiogu, affirmed that the election adhered to all prescribed guidelines and procedures.
“The election followed the laid down guidelines and procedures,” Ejiogu stated. “We ensured inclusive participation by engaging with critical stakeholders and all security agencies. Political parties were able to inspect sensitive materials, and the election was peaceful, fair, transparent, and credible.”
He further confirmed that elections were conducted across the 305 wards and 27 local government areas (LGAs), with voting taking place at 4,758 polling units. “The APC won all the chairmanship and councilorship seats,” he added.
According to the commission, 17 political parties participated in the elections.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dismissed the election as deeply flawed. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, described the process as a “charade” and “undemocratic,” alleging several procedural violations.
“It is on record that ISIEC did not release the list of candidates for the election, nor did the commission publish the voter register at the polling units, as required by law,” Obiaku said. “There was no communication with political parties, candidates, or stakeholders ahead of the election. In fact, a day before the election, no one knew who the ISIEC electoral officers were or how ad-hoc staff were selected.”
Despite these allegations, the election concluded on Saturday with the APC securing a clean sweep across the state.
