APC Sweeps All 23 Sokoto Local Government Seats

The All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a sweeping victory in the Sokoto State local government elections, clinching all 23 chairmanship positions and their corresponding councillorship seats.

The results were announced on Monday by Alhaji Aliyu Suleiman, Chairman of the Sokoto State Independent Electoral Commission (SSIEC). The elections, which took place last Saturday, saw participation from 15 political parties. However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition, notably boycotted the process.

Following the official declaration, certificates of return were immediately issued to the successful candidates, formally recognizing their election by the commission.

The newly elected chairmen will be sworn in by Governor Ahmed Aliyu later today at 4 PM.

In a related development, the APC also dominated the Kwara State local government elections, outpacing the PDP and other competitors across all 16 council areas.

According to the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC), the APC’s victory comes after a seven-year hiatus in local governance elections. Competing against the PDP, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Accord Party, and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), the APC’s success spanned the 16 council areas and 193 wards.

This marks a significant return to local governance in Kwara State, as no council elections had been held since 2017.
