The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has officially rejected the results of the Edo State Governorship election, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
At a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum, voiced the party’s dissatisfaction with the election outcome, asserting that the people of Edo State overwhelmingly supported the PDP’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo. According to Damagum, the party expected nothing less than Ighodalo being declared the governor-elect.
Damagum urged INEC to reconsider its stance, citing provisions in the Electoral Act that still offer a window for the commission to review its decision. He emphasized the need for INEC to correct what he described as a flawed process.
The PDP leader further alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC), in collaboration with what he called “a compromised INEC” and the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police for the zone, had plotted to manipulate the election results, a plan the PDP had reportedly flagged ahead of time.
The PDP has vowed to contest the election results in court, seeking to restore what they believe is the rightful mandate of the Edo people.
