Ignore Calls to Reinstate Beta Edu, CSO Tells Presidency

A civil society organization (CSO) has dismissed a plea by Cecilia Ogbeche Odok for the reinstatement of Dr. Beta Edu as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development.

The CSO argued that Dr. Edu’s suspension is crucial to ensure a thorough investigation into the allegations against her, promoting accountability and transparency within the government.

In a press statement, CSO spokesman, Comrade Gremma Ibrahim Musa, stressed the importance of upholding integrity over personal or political sentiments for Nigeria’s progress. “Due process must be respected, and Dr. Edu’s suspension is essential to avoid any potential interference or obstruction of justice,” he stated.

The organization urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stand firm against pressure from what they described as “self-serving individuals” and cautioned that reinstating Dr. Edu would not only jeopardize anti-corruption efforts but also damage public trust in the government.

“If President Tinubu yields to this emotional blackmail, we will mobilize support for a pro-people government in 2027,” the group warned.

The CSO also called on the National Assembly to align with the president’s policies, emphasizing the need to prioritize transparency and accountability in governance.

This development comes at a time when there are increasing calls for the replacement of the embattled minister, particularly given the ministry’s pivotal role in addressing the impact of fuel subsidy removal and rising food inflation on Nigerians.
