A tragic incident occurred at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where a lion fatally attacked its handler, Babaji Daule. The zoo is part of the expansive complex established by former Nigerian President and global statesman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
According to a report by *YOUNEWS* on Sunday, September 29, 2024, the attack took place early on Saturday. The zoo’s Chief Security Officer reported the incident around 7:40 a.m.
Details reveal that the handler failed to properly secure the locks and barricades of the lion’s enclosure before attempting to feed the animal. This negligence allowed the lion to escape from its cage and launch a fatal attack, inflicting severe injuries on Daule’s neck, leading to his death.
The handler’s body was transported to Ijaye General Hospital’s mortuary, while the lion was shot in order to free the victim from its grip.
The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, has confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing to prevent future occurrences of such tragic events.
